Clubface Control

GOLF SKILLS FOR BEGINNERS

Written by PGA Pro, Tom Huttunen

What is the clubface?

The clubface is the part of the club which comes into contact with the ball. It has the primary influence over which direction the ball will begin its flight and is therefore very important to us when it comes to hitting the ball straight.

How should we present the club face?

It would seem common sense that we should try and hit the ball with a square/neutral club face in order to get the ball flying towards our target. Unfortunately, this is much easier said than done! Even the world’s best golfers struggle to deliver the face square 100% of the time.
In fact, when it comes to the point when you are trying to curve a golf ball, you may not even want the face to be pointing at the target at all…. (don’t worry about this for now!)
With the nature of the swing being such a large and powerful motion, it becomes very easy to unintentionally twist the face into a closed or open condition (pictured below).

How do we train clubface control?

Before we can gain control of the clubface, we need to become aware of it. To help us with this task we can draw inspiration from the children’s fairy-tale of Goldilocks. You know the premise… too much, too little and just right.
Try this drill:
*best practiced at slower speeds for new golfers
- Get yourself down to the driving range and line up 3 balls to hit
- Without changing the alignment of your body or clubface at setup…
- Proceed to make a swing at each ball and see if you can intentionally twist that clubface closed for the first ball, open for the second and then try to hit the last ball as straight as possible
After 10 minutes practice you should already start to feel like you have much more awareness and control over the direction of your shots!

Hopefully you found this useful. Please get in contact should you have any questions or would like to arrange any tuition

“Just finished 3 months with Tom. What can I say. 10 shots of my handicap, A greater understanding of the golf swing and an awful lot of fun. A great bloke with outstanding knowledge of the game. Thanks for everything”

Chris

“I was a struggling 13 Handicapper and becoming totally disillusioned with my golf. I booked a course of Lessons with Tom to work on my game throughout the winter of 2018 /2019. We worked on all aspects of my game. The combination of Trackman technology and Toms expertise transformed my game. I ended my 2019 summer season with a handicap of 9.0. More importantly I had started to enjoy the game once again. Toms expertise and coaching has re-energised my enthusiasm and vastly improved my game!”

Garry

“Had my first golf lesson with Tom, really professional and patient, really knowledgeable and makes the lesson enjoyable and fun! Definitely would recommend”

Adam

“First lesson with Tom was very informative, practical and was also great fun. The first thing he showed me was a can of athlete foot spray! I’ll let Tom explain why that was! Really knows his stuff and gets technical info across in an easy to understand way”

Dave

“Tom’s an excellent coach with a great approach - personalising drills to find something that specifically works for you instead of sticking to the same old things. Combining that with the data from trackman, and Tom’s explanation of what all the numbers actually mean and how they relate to your swing helps so much in identifying and rectifying problems. If you follow his guidance (and put in the practice ☺️) your game will definitely improve. I’d happily recommend him to anyone, and regularly do!”

Phil

“Fantastic lesson from Tom today. A real thinker in terms of my skills moving forward. I’ve come away feeling positive and looking forward to getting going on my new drills. Practice makes perfect! Thanks Tom!”

Adrienne

“Great coach. Really knows his stuff and I’m looking forward to my next lesson. Brilliant”

Mark

“Since taking golf lessons with tom, I’ve gone from a 14 handicap with the shanks, struggling to break 90, and now I’m down to a 9 handicap In a short period of time shooting in the 70’s with no shanks. This is the result from having a great golf coach. ”

Teaching Philosophy 👨‍🎓

"I'm a big believer in training golfers to become skillful rather than obsessing too much over technique, especially at the beginning...

I have seen too many golfers spending countless hours trying to 'perfect' their technique and lose sight of the bigger picture of what it takes to play this brilliant game. Once a player is presented with the basic skillsets that are needed to play good golf and a clear understanding of how to train them it still amazes me how quickly improvements can be made that are built to last!"
